PhD Position in Sturgeon Movement Ecology
The Freshwater Fish Ecology Laboratory at UNBC (www.ffishlab.ca) is looking for a PhD student to conduct a project on the movement ecology of white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) in the lower Columbia River. The successful candidate will work with an existing 10-year acoustic telemetry data set to analyze the movements of wild, adult female and male white sturgeon. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. James Crossman (BC Hydro) and will provide the PhD with an
opportunity to gain experience working with industry.
The PhD student will be supported by a Mitacs Accelerate Scholarship in the total of CAD $ 24,000 / year over three years. The student will also have access to $10,800 / year to pay for expenses related to the project (e.g. attend conferences, purchase books and miscellaneous research material).
The ideal candidate should have:
• MSc in fisheries, aquatic ecology, statistics or another relevant field
• Published in peer-reviewed journals
• Strong quantitative skills
• Experience with the software R
• Experience with databases (preferably using PostgreSQL)
• Experience with telemetry data sets
